Happenings at the Garden

Another hot sweaty summer for gardeners, but our community garden continues to evolve and grow.

Our new veggie beds beside the covered area produced a good crop of tomatoes, some beans and rockmelons, and a great crop of basil.

Paw paws in their individual beds are looking terrific and have been underplanted with strawberries.

Some new crops have been planted – rosella, eggplant, tomatoes and capsicums – and are all doing well.

Thanks to a donation from the Whitsunday Regional Council, we were able to purchase hard wood chip mulch for the new orchard area, with some left over for the beds under the existing trees. What a difference that makes, and hopefully will help in the battle against the dreaded nutgrass. We will start planting new fruit trees at our seed sowing and planting day (more about that later).

We took pity on our neglected dragon fruit, which has stayed alive and even produced fruit with no care for five years and built it a proper support. Also, some cuttings were taken so we have another dragon fruit at the back of the garden.

In the Zone 2 Bushes/herbaceous perennial area, our chillies continue cropping and we had a small harvest of wax jambu (rose apple). Our first pomegranate appeared on the tree but alas did not make it to harvest. Many other edibles continue to thrive in this area

Upcoming events

Sunday 3rd April from 9.00 am at the garden

Seed sowing and planting workshop

With the weather cooling this is the best time of year for planting all sorts of edibles. We will have a demonstration of vegetable seed sowing, both direct in the garden beds and into punnets. Seedlings will also be planted out, and we should have some for you to take home. There will also be some new fruit trees to be planted in the orchard.
This will be combined with

Paint a Colourful Garden

A fun activity for the little gardeners. Drawing and colouring flowers, leaves or bugs found in our garden.

Abundance Swap and Morning Tea

Bring along anything you have in abundance to swap and join us for a cuppa.
Mark the date in your diary and keep an eye on our facebook page for more details, and more workshops later in the year.
