Happenings at the Garden

Happily our list of “big” projects is almost complete. The banana patch looks great and the passionfruit trellis has been replaced and a new pollinator and predator garden established,so theat the entrance to the garden looks lovely. The blue pea vine has been removes, the compost bins are neat and tidy, and all the irrigation black hoses have been buried. Lots of rubbish has been removed although we still need to clear up the back section of the garden. Lastly, the storage container has received its first coat of paint, and looks much better. Second coat going on shortly.

2022 AGM

Our 7th AGM was held on 9 October last year with the sitting office holders and committee members returned unopposed. The garden really needs some new people with fresh ideas, please think about becoming a committee member this year.

Summer is once again proving too hot for many of the annual vegetable crops. After some early success with tomatillos, it seems the remainder of the crop is being enjoyed by small green caterpillars. Something we have learnt for next time! The mung beans were very successful. We learnt that if you want to eat the pods like regular beans, they must be picked when very young. Otherwise, it is very easy to leave the pods on the bushes till dry, and then sprout them – very tasty.

The fruit trees that were planted when we set up the garden in 2017 and 18 are now bearing good crops – citrus, mangoes, rose apples, elderberries, etc. Lots of healthy, tasty fruit. Looks like we will get another small crop of dragon fruit and maybe some pomegranates too.

As always, there is plenty of regular garden maintenance to be done – grass cutting, weeding, pruning, planting and harvesting

The Year Ahead

Understandably, attendance at the garden at this time of year is very low – heat, rain and holidays. Hopefully we will see lots of members, both old and new, soon.
