After a very hot dry start to the summer which saw most of our veggies say “no thanks, I will come back when it’s a bit cooler” we have had some lovely soaking rain to entice us (and the Marsh flies) back to the garden. Everything is growing like mad, so it will be ‘all hands on deck’ till the weeds are under control again.

Happenings at the Garden

We are now members of the Sharewaste scheme and many people have been depositing their food waste into our dedicated compost bin.  It is now half full and starting to turn into beautiful compost for our garden.

We will soon purchase another bin to receive fresh donations while the first bin matures. Thanks to all our participants!

Our “Adopt a Garden Bed” program has not been quite as popular and there are still several garden beds awaiting adoption by new carers. Let us know if you would like to have your own little piece of the garden to grow your favourite plants.

Plant of the Season

One plant that did not give up in the heat is the Angled Luffa. This one apparently planted itself and grew without any human help, first disguising itself as a cucumber so we wouldn’t notice it. The angled luffa, like its cousins pumpkins and watermelons, is a vigorously growing vine which will climb anything, and can be trained over an arch or trellis to provide shade for other plants or humans – very useful in this weather. The young fruit can be picked and eaten as a zucchini substitute. Altogether, a very useful plant.

FAQ

A question often heard by members is “where is the garden?” For those who are unsure, here is a map.

Upcoming Events

Planning meetings are held at the garden on the second Saturday of the month at 3 pm. All are

welcome to attend, just bring your ideas and suggestions. The first meeting for the year will be on February 8 – see you there.

Abundance Day/Produce Swaps are held on the last Sunday of the month commencing at about 10.00 am after our regular gardening session. Again, all are welcome, doesn’t matter if you don’t have anything to swap this month, you may have next month.

We are still looking for “Project Managers” to take on specific tasks, e.g. bees, worm farm, bananas, seed library, etc. Let us know if you have a special interest that you would like to see at the garden.

We will be planning other events and workshops throughout the year – watch this space!
