What’s happened over summer?
Funds from our first community grant were fully allocated and the grant successfully completed. The grant allowed us to purchase a shipping container for storage, a water tank, a solar pump and bore as well as trees and soil.
Over the last few months we have had two successful working bees in November and January where we erected dragon fruit frames, continued to set up garden beds and established paths with sawdust. The drip irrigation has also been laid out to the garden beds and fruit trees. Most importantly we enjoyed gardening together!
Weeds have become a bit of a problem and we have tackled this issue in various ways. A big shout out to our tireless weeders for their huge efforts! We are trialling several organic methods of weed eradication.
What’s growing in the garden?
Our trees have mostly survived the very hot summer and some are doing marvellously well. The panama berry and sandpaper fig trees are about to bear their first crop.
Other successful crops are our watermelons, cucumbers, corn, snake beans and gourds. The rosellas and cape gooseberries are also about to fruit. The banana trees and cassava are going well and we have just planted lots more bananas.
